The Secret Movie
I finally gave in and watched “The Secret” movie online a few nights ago. Essentially, this movie claims one can have/acheive/become anything one wants by using the “law of attraction.” This entails visualizing yourself where you want to be and eliminating negative thoughts and doubts. I found several things to like and several more to dislike about this The Secret:
Things I liked:
- The idea of starting the day by being grateful for what you already have.
- The notion that reflecting carefully on what you want, who you want to be, where you want to go will help you to achieve all these things.
Things I didn’t like:
- The suggestion that any of this is a “secret” that has intentionally been “suppressed” by the powerful elite. The conspiracy theory combined with pictures of Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man smacked of The Da Vinci Code.
- Pseudo-science references to waves that attract one another and the irrefutable “Law of Attraction” as a way of legitimating the argument of the film. Anyway, isn’t it usually the case that opposites attract?
- The production quality and acting seemed reminiscent of an infomercial. So much of the movie seemed geared towards getting rich quick. The use of stock footage of “third world” children seemed particularly objectionable.
So what does this all mean to me. I will try to be more grateful for what I have, less anxious and/or worried. I may try to reflect more on what I want to achieve. However, if this produces tangible results it is probably because it will have changed the way I see the world and the way I act.
